Artificial placenta system

Amnioshell is a revolutionary and highly innovative medical device that simulates the intrauterine environment within an artificial placenta system, specifically designed for the treatment of extreme premature babies. This advanced system provides an environment that emulates the maternal womb, aiming to maintain the fetus in optimal conditions and extend the period of development outside the maternal uterus, with the goal of reducing complications and increasing the survival rate and quality of life of neonates.


The design of Amnioshell has faced the challenge of combining innovation and functionality. Special importance has been given to the biocompatibility of the materials. Additionally, meticulous work has been done on the device’s impermeability and in facilitating access to the fetus for manipulation.


In collaboration with specialists in fetal surgery, an intuitive and efficient design has been developed. Transparent materials have been selected in key areas to enhance visibility. The opening levers, in a striking orange color, allow for quick and effective identification of the operable areas. 


This project seeks to improve medical care in cases of extreme prematurity and other fetal conditions, where it is currently estimated that up to 25,000 extreme preemies annually in Europe could benefit from such innovation.
